Frequent mistakes in interior design

Frequent mistakes in interior design are made by both specialists and enthusiasts of this sector who choose to furnish their home themselves. Since you can only learn from mistakes, we have prepared a list of the most common mistakes in interior design and how to avoid them.

Have you ever entered a house and, although each piece of furniture taken separately was very beautiful, you had the impression that something wasn’t right or that the room was not very welcoming? This is due to the fact that we tend to make mistakes when decorating our home.

Due to excessive zeal you can overcrowd a room with unsuitable furniture, you can be hasty in choosing colors or you can even realize that the light does not help the furnishing of the house at all.

How to avoid these frequent mistakes in interior design?

1. Overcrowding of furniture

Sometimes it happens that you don’t take into account the space you have available at home and, while you’re shopping, you think it’s a good idea to buy that splendid sofa, even if it will take up more than half of your living room. Only when you get home will you realize that your gorgeous, brand new sofa leaves you with too little space for other furniture or decorative items.

On the other hand there is the risk of overcrowding the room with too much furniture. Even if adequately sized, when there are too many of them and the transition space is too small, the room will feel saturated and unwelcoming.

Avoid these situations by choosing furniture carefully. Orientate yourself based on the space you have available and taking into account the fact that the furniture must first of all be practical and functional.

2. Incorrect lighting

The light in a room helps to create a pleasant environment, if chosen correctly. The light varies depending on the room, for the bedroom it is advisable to have a warm light source, while for spaces such as the office or living room a light that is as natural as possible is recommended. This will facilitate the carrying out of activities throughout the day.

Likewise, chandeliers or lamps should not be banal, but should complement the room perfectly. For the bedroom you can choose a particular floor lamp, while for the living room you can opt for an imposing and elegant chandelier. Here you can see all the lighting items from the Mavis collection.

3. The colors of the rooms

I addressed the topic of chromaticity in interior design in This item. Choosing a color palette is important. It is one of the first steps you need to take to fix up your home.

The most common mistake is incorrect color matching. If you choose to paint the walls of a room orange, it would not be a good idea to place a blue sofa right next to one of the walls. There’s nothing wrong with wanting to add a pop of color to your home. You can do this starting from a neutral colored base.

If you want that orange wall, opt for a light-colored sofa like, for example, beige. Or, conversely, if you want that blue sofa, it’s a good idea to paint the walls of the room white or light gray. The possibilities are many!

4. The correct order of the work phases is not followed

There is a certain order in which it is best to carry out the phases of an internal arrangement. If you choose to purchase furniture for a room and then paint it, it would be a good idea to reconsider. It is recommended to first paint the walls in the desired color and then purchase the furniture. But, since there is also a gift, the most effective thing is to do a little market research before starting the painting work. This way you will ensure that you find the ideal furniture that will suit that room.

5. You don’t place decorative objects correctly

If we have already gone through the major phases of an interior design, we must not neglect the details either. Decorative elements can change the look of an entire room if chosen carefully, but above all if placed in the right place.

Among the most common mistakes in interior design is the incorrect positioning of paintings or photo frames. The ideal is that they are positioned at a distance of 1.60 – 1.70 m from the floor. In this way those who look at them do not need to sit or stand on the floors to be able to admire the image.

Also take into account the positioning of the mirrors. If placed in the right place, they will visually enlarge the room. If they are not placed where they should be, they can capture light rays which then reflect unpleasantly.

Placement of decorative objects: frequent mistakes in interior design

These are just a few examples from the category of frequent mistakes in interior design. Now that you know how to avoid them, decorating your home will be a fun process, not a chore. It’s important to feel good in your home and enjoy the way it is organized.
